SUMMARY:A Play in a Day
DESCRIPTION:A day of gentle drama workshops looking at the history of women’s rights, social justice and misogyny. Help to tell the story of a lost feminist socialist from the 1890s. You don’t need any previous performing experience and you don’t have to do anything on your own. Using drama, choral speaking, physical theatre, song etc. we will create the story of an anonymous, whistle blowing factory girl in her own words. Ada Nield spent a lifetime working for women’s rights, some of it spent in Chorlton! Ada’s daughter Doris collected her mother’s writing after Ada’s death in 1945. This will be the basis of our script. Through a series of carefully held workshops we will work on the play together in the afternoon and then perform it to all your friends and family that same evening. The play is called “Anonymous”. Entrance to the play is free, so bring everyone. Most of the characters in the play are female and the characters will be played by any gender depending on who we have. ALL WELCOME, age 12+. LGBTQIA+ inclusive, accessible venue. This is the first step to reviving Ada’s achievements and getting a blue plaque for her address in Chorlton. This unique event is new to Chorlton Arts Festival. It is a chance for our community to tell the story of one of our own. This working-class activist changed the world despite having very little formal education. It is time that we shone a light on her – we still need her like today.
