Flight of the Voice: Vocal Improvisation Lab with Maria Luana
A vocal improvisation workshop to dive into the universe of body and voice as an instrument and expand your creative and cultural horizons, musicality, listening, spontaneity, and vocal and creative skills. We’ll embark on a collective journey through vocal exploration where you will expand your vocabulary possibilities, discovering new languages and developing your skills for storytelling in your singing. We will work on invented phonemes, melodies, polyrhythms and patterns that come from deep listening, and dive on voice exploration, sung and spoken, to expand your musical repertoire.
Originally from Uruguay, Maria Luana is a singer, artist, voice coach and sound therapist based in Brazil. Her experience is varied and eclectic, drawn from studying under Fernando Barba from Barbatuques, as well as vocal improvisation and body rhythm techniques from pioneers such as Stenio Mendes, Keith Terry, Santiago Vazquez, Rhiannon, Joey Blake and Roger Treece. She has shared and learnt with different communities in Brazil, such as ‘Caixeiras do Divino’ (an indigenous and Afro-Brazilian woman playing drums and singing), Ilu Oba de Min (an Afro-Brazilian percussion group of more than 300 women that play Orixá-based chants and “toques”), and learnt with the Fulni-ô indigenous tribe in North East of Brazil. She particularly loves North Argentina indigenous culture and songs, and has been singing for more than 10 years in a vocal group with Mozambiquan singer Lenna Bahule.
Whether you’ve been exploring your voice for years or are new to this practice, everyone is welcome. Please pass this invitation onto any friends who would benefit from attending. As each of us seek, and express our unique voice, we contribute to collective empowerment.
