Earthsong Choir – Welcome!

Come home to singing with Earthsong – a monthly singing community where we gather to celebrate the changing seasons through songs of our earth, rivers, skies and seas.

• Everything is taught by ear, and every voice is welcome.  We build the harmonies together, step by step so nobody is left behind, and weaving our voices together creates real magic.

• No auditions, no sheet music, no previous experience needed – learn and sing beautiful harmony songs inspired by nature in a relaxed, friendly circle!
• Held by experienced teacher, facilitator and song-leader Helen East, our new season is “Into Winter“, and runs from September to January.

All sessions run from 2.00–4.00 pm at Hartington Grove Friends (Quaker) Meeting House, Cambridge CB1 7UB.  The Quaker Meeting House has a carpark and is wheelchair accessible.

Earthsong: a place to breathe, laugh, sing and belong

Life can be busy, noisy and demanding and we can lose sight of the song and the beauty.  Earthsong is not just a place to slow down and re-connect with yourself, your voice and others, but to be reminded of and uplifted by the beauty of nature, and how we are intimately connected to it.  

The songs themselves, celebrating nature, range from meditative to joyfully resounding – and some of us will move around (dancing optional!). Different voice parts can interweave creating a tapestry or soundscape.  The songs are drawn from both our heritage and the natural voice movement and might be the most ancient rounds, or brand-new songs in glorious harmony by, for example, Susie Ro Prater or Ali Burns.

Also, a note of reassurance. Many people arrive feeling nervous, convinced they “can’t sing”, and leave relaxed and uplifted.  One singer said, “I was told I couldn’t sing and had to leave the school choir. I can’t tell you how much it means to sing now with others.”  Newbies welcome!  And some of our singers are experienced choir singers, and even song-writers.  Whatever your level of experience, Earthsong is a great thing to have once a month in your life!

What to expect at an Earthsong gathering

✓ We begin with a relaxed start and welcome in a circle. 

✓ Songs are taught by ear in small, manageable steps so that everyone feels secure.  Wonderful harmonies are built up layer by layer in the same way – it can feel magical.  Helen East is a Natural Voice practitioner, so follows their song-sharing ethos of inclusivity, believing that singing is our birthright.

✓ We have a brief water break and social time part way through and afterwards we usually go to a local cafe.

✓ Each gathering I try to make complete in itself, but at the same time building our repertoire.  Each gathering will reflect the season, bringing new songs and building on those we know.

✓ Come as you are without pressure!   We are a song circle singing for ourselves; we are not preparing for a concert but sharing the joy of singing.  Sometimes there is an invitation to perform if you would like to. Some of us sang, for example, in the summer on Jesus Green at the River Cam event, and we may share what we do with friends and family.  But these are simply invitations to perform if you would like to.
