Mendip Song Circle – Spring Gathering
Relax, breathe, sing, connect!
All are welcome and no previous experience necessary…this ‘alternative’ format has been very much enjoyed by both experienced singers and people who have never sung with a group before.
We sing from the core and the heart rather than the head…the intention is to simply create a positive energy through connecting our voices with others.
Mendip Song Circle meets on an occasional basis and for our Spring Gathering we have been offered the lovely Hallr Wood near Charlton Mackrell, run as an outdoor education site, which provides us with a wonderful natural setting. We have options in terms of the space in which to sing (including a yurt) which will be determined on the day, depending on the weather.
We will explore simple chants, mantras and rounds from a variety of sources and cultures and quietly embrace the spaces in-between. By using traditional call and response, learning by ear and repetition, we echo the voices of our ancestors in celebration of the seasons, the elements and our common humanity.
At times we get quite tribal but overall this is a meditative approach to singing where we have the space to sing ‘freestyle’, helping to let go and find inner peace. There will be light and shade, joy and reflection, ebb and flow…and by the end of the session we will feel as one.
Song Circle provides a safe space and supports anyone struggling with anxiety or stress. You don’t even have to sing or sound your voice all of the time, you can simply listen or play percussion instead.
At the same time there is plenty of scope for improvisation and harmony for anyone wishing to explore their voices further. There is no right or wrong…
We will have a break approx halfway through and then there is the option to bring and share a picnic lunch afterwards, weather permitting.
