Visiting Voices – harmony singing workshops

546 546 people viewed this event.

Visiting Voices is a series of full‑day singing workshops bringing outstanding songwriters and song leaders to Glasgow from across the UK. This year we’re delighted to welcome Molara Awen (Wales), Katy Rose Bennett (Wales) and Una McCann (Belfast), each leading their own 1 day stand-alone  workshop in Glasgow. Across three rich and uplifting days we’ll sing original songs and thoughtfully created arrangements, shared in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

These workshops are open to everyone — whether you sing regularly or are completely new to harmony singing. You will  learn new  & original songs and enjoy the experience of making a beautiful sound together. Come for one workshop, or make space for all three (book the whole series with a 10% discount)

6 June: Molara Awen

We’re delighted to kick off the workshop series with Molara – an inspirational singer, songwriter and exceptional community song leader with a rich performance background spanning dub, reggae and world music. Related to the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti, founder member of Zion Train and collaborator with Mad Professor & Roots DM, she has worked with musicians and singers from across the globe, founding One Voice Choir in 2005 to celebrate her love of international harmonies and rhythms.

Molara’s workshops are rooted in global song traditions, where she brings cross‑cultural a cappella repertoire alongside her own compositions and vocal arrangements, often inspired and shaped by world music influences, with African musical traditions  especially close to her heart. Molara’s sessions are warm, inclusive and deeply connected to community. Expect a joyful and eclectic workshop celebrating life, the universe and everything in between. Not to be missed!

What people say about singing with Molara:

‘…packed full of joyful songs that lifted the spirit and left you no choice but to move your body. Molara’s beautiful voice and playful energy were infectious in the best possible sense.’

‘Workshop took us on a journey around the world. We flowed from one uplifting harmony to another.’

5 September: Katy Rose Bennett

After an amazing workshop last year, and in response to strong demand, we are thrilled to invite Katy back to Glasgow again. Katy is a folk singer-songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist who brings a deep love of song, connection and shared voice to her teaching. She has been creating her earthy, intimate folk music for over 20 years, telling stories of love, despair, connection and community, and over the past years her songs have been shared in many choirs and workshops in Scotland.

As before, she will be bringing a load of her own acappella songs and arrangements which she’ll lead in her unique, energetic and infectious teaching style. It’ll be fun, relaxed and engaging with everything taught by ear and no need to read music. You’ll leave with songs and harmonies stuck in your heads for a good few weeks!

What people say about singing with Katy:

‘’Amazingly powerful and restorative’

‘’uplifting and life affirming’’

‘’I love Katy‘s joy and energy – she is a force of nature. And writes beautiful songs’’

21 November: Una McCann

Una’s songs have been touching hearts in choirs and singing circles in Scotland over the past couple of years and we are so delighted to bring her to Glasgow in person. Una is a songwriter, choir leader and musician who  has been leading groups in harmony since her school days. With a passion for inclusion and bringing all voices into the room, Una’s workshops are fun and engaging. Every voice is welcome – especially singers still discovering their voice or people who have been told not to sing.

Una writes melodies and words that will stay in your head for weeks to come. Her songs are often funky, harmoniously rich songs with a Gospel influence. Her lyrics are often joyful and heart opening. You can expect to enjoy a fun and relaxing day immersed in beautiful harmony and to leave with your head and heart full.

What people say about singing with Una:

“An incredible leader with so much knowledge and so many beautiful songs to share’’

“Choir practices are such fun we don’t realise how hard we’ve worked – most of us don’t
want to go home at the end of the rehearsal.”

“I left this session with my heart soaring, my voice still lilting to the songs, and a positive
bounce in my step.”
